Understand the concept

How matched betting works — in plain English.

Matched betting combines a bookmaker offer with a lay bet on an exchange, covering both outcomes. LayMatched guides you through each step.

The core idea

Two bets. One outcome. Known result.

A bookmaker gives you a free bet as a promotion. You place a qualifying bet with your own money at the bookmaker, then "lay" the same outcome at the exchange (betting against it). Whatever happens, the two bets cancel out — you unlock the free bet with a small, known qualifying loss.

Qualifying bet

Your first bet with the bookmaker using your own money. It meets the offer's conditions (e.g. "bet £10, get £30 free bet"). You also lay this bet at the exchange.

Result: Small known loss (the "qualifying loss") — typically £0.50–£2.00.

Lay bet

At the exchange, you bet against the same outcome. If the bookmaker back bet wins, the lay loses (and vice versa). The exchange holds "liability" — the money it would pay out if the lay loses.

Key point: Liability is not a loss — it's money reserved by the exchange.

Free bet reward

Once the qualifying bet settles, the bookmaker credits your free bet. Now you convert it to cash: back the free bet at the bookmaker, lay it at the exchange. Again, every outcome is covered.

Result: Realised profit — typically 70–80% of the free bet value.

Settlement

After each event finishes, you record the actual result. LayMatched updates your balances, shows the realised profit for that offer, and tells you what's next.

No theory: You see what the offer actually made you.

The basics

Understand the match.

The three building blocks behind every matched bet.

Back bet
Betting for an outcome to happen. "I back Team A to win." Placed at the bookmaker.
Lay bet
Betting against an outcome. "I lay Team A" = I win if Team A doesn't win. Placed at the exchange.
Liability
The money the exchange holds to cover your lay bet if it loses. It's reserved, not spent. Released when the event settles.

Getting the offer

Unlock and qualify.

Know the small cost, the reward type and what happens next.

Qualifying bet
The first bet you place with your own money to unlock a bookmaker's free bet offer.
Qualifying loss
The small, known cost of the qualifying bet (back + lay don't perfectly cancel). The price of unlocking the free bet.
Free bet (SNR)
Stake Not Returned. The free bet stake is not returned with winnings. If you win £30 at 2.0, you get £30 — not £60.
Free bet (SR)
Stake Returned. The free bet stake is returned. If you win £30 at 2.0, you get £60 (£30 stake + £30 winnings).

Commission
The exchange's fee on net winnings (typically 2–5%). LayMatched includes it in every calculation.
Realised profit
What the offer actually made you after everything settles — not a theoretical number.

Guided at every step

How LayMatched assists through the full journey.

From finding the right offer to seeing what it actually made you, every decision stays in one connected flow.

  1. 1

    Find the right offer

Without LayMatched: Wading through dozens of bookmaker sites, comparing terms, wondering which are current.

With LayMatched: Offer Finder shows verified promotions with estimated value, key terms (qualifying stake, min odds, expiry) and eligibility guidance — all in one place.

  2. 2

    Check the terms that matter

Without LayMatched: Reading pages of small print, missing restrictions, realising too late that you don't qualify.

With LayMatched: Critical terms presented up front — qualifying stake, minimum odds, reward type, expiry, restrictions — in plain English.

  3. 3

    Calculate the qualifying match

Without LayMatched: Juggling calculator apps, manually entering odds, wondering if commission is included, calculating liability separately.

With LayMatched: Enter back odds and lay odds. LayMatched calculates lay stake, liability, both outcomes, and checks your recorded bookmaker/exchange balances — all in one screen.

  4. 4

    Check funding, then place

Without LayMatched: Hoping you have enough in both accounts. Discovering too late that the exchange balance is short.

With LayMatched: Funding readiness shown before you place — bookmaker cash vs back stake, exchange balance vs liability. Partial-match awareness if liquidity is thin.

  5. 5

    Record settlement, see the result

Without LayMatched: Manually updating spreadsheets. Losing track of which bets settled and which are still open.

With LayMatched: Record the actual outcome (won/lost). Balances update automatically. Realised profit for the qualifying leg shown. Next action (wait for reward) displayed.

  6. 6

    Convert the free bet

Without LayMatched: Different calculator for free bets. Forgetting SNR vs SR. Missing expiry deadlines.

With LayMatched: Same guided flow for reward conversion. Reward tracked with expiry countdown. Calculator switches mode automatically. Final realised profit for the whole offer shown.
